Unlike readable books, a reference book gives a bonus the moment you purchase it but can (obviously) only benefit the character holding it in his/her inventory. The Merchants Ledger, if you have it, will be updated with this. Reference books give the character holding them a Skill bonus. A subreddit and community for the Mount & Blade series, created by TaleWorlds. The player begins reading a book while in camp and can give his or her companions books while talking with them. Reading can only be initiated by a character who has a not-yet-read book in her/her inventory and who has a sufficiently high Intelligence. That does not however mean that you should not choose to play a female character, or one who is not of noble birth. Remember that in the traditional medieval society depicted in the game, war and politics are usually dominated by male members of the nobility. Before beginning the game you must create your character. Attacking caravans or peasants of a nation can cause them to declare war.

Presumably sharing a significant amount of border space makes these incidents more likely. Sometimes ‘border incidents’ will occur randomly, which makes war more likely to occur. Readable books grant the player or any companion a permanent bonus to an Attribute or Skill once it has been read from cover to cover this takes some time.
